Engineering Steels

EN1A is a low-carbon steel with added sulphur that breaks chips cleanly and lets lathes run fast. It is the standard choice for high-volume turned parts that are not heavily stressed.

Good to know

The sulphur that makes EN1A easy to machine also makes it a poor choice for welding and for parts under high stress.

If a turned part needs strength or welding, EN3B or an alloy grade is usually the better option.

EN1A questions

Can EN1A be welded?

It is not recommended. The added sulphur makes welds prone to cracking.

Why choose EN1A over mild steel?

It machines much faster with a better finish, which saves time and tooling on turned parts.
