Engineering Steels

EN9Supplier in Johannesburg. Cut to size, delivered nationwide.

EN9 is a medium-carbon steel with around 0.55% carbon. It is stronger and harder-wearing than mild steel and responds well to flame and induction hardening, which makes it a common choice for sprockets, gears and parts that rub.

Good to know

EN9 is a cost-effective step up from mild steel when wear is the main problem rather than shock loading.

Its higher carbon means welding needs preheat and care. For welded parts, ask us about alternatives.

EN9 questions

What is EN9 used for?

Mostly sprockets, gears, cams and other parts that need wear resistance, often with the working surface flame or induction hardened.

Can EN9 be welded?

It can, but the higher carbon content needs preheating and controlled cooling to avoid cracking.
